"Duet for One", by Tom Kempinski

August 11-16 at 7:30pm each night, and August 17 at 2:30pm

"Duet for One", is a fictional dramatization of the battle fought by the world-renowned cello virtuoso, Jacqueline du Pre, against multiple sclerosis. By giving his protagonist a different name and instrument, the work is free from the limitations of factual biography, and allows Kempinski to explore his real subject: the inner reality faced by any creative artist deprived by illness or disability of the one thing that brings meaning to his or her life, the sharing of art through performance. Starring Jonathan Farwell & Wendy Ishii, “Bas Bleu’s Duet for One affords a marvelous opportunity to see two exceptionally fine actors..."

Bernice/Butterfly: A Two-Part Invention

Performances:

Saturday May 31, 2008 through Sunday Jun 29, 2008

Nagle Jackson takes us to a small, dying Kansas town where we meet two people with nothing in common except…everything. Bernice is a folksy waitress at the O-Kay Diner, and Randall is a slightly off-balance math professor. The play explores their dreams and lost opportunities. John Moore, the Denver Post Theater Critic, described the play as a gut-wrenching and yet comic showcase... . it’s a poignant, surprisingly accessible and often uproarious character study of two likable small-town Kansans." Mr. Moore recommended Bernice/Butterfly to the Pulitzer Prize committee for nomination.

Acoustic Eidolon

Performances:

Saturday August 9, 2008 at 7:30PM

Sunday August 10, 2008 at 7:30PM

Every once in a while a musical group will come along with an innovative sound so unique that it requires the construction of an entirely new and unheard-of of instrument. The amazingly gifted duo of Joe Scott and Hannah Alkire are such a group: when they became Acoustic Eidolon, the revolutionary instrument needed to accurately express their talent was the “guitjo”.

The guitjo (pronounced “git-jo”) is custom built by world premier luthiers, Rich Mermer of Florida and Deny Stevens of Oregon. The double neck with 14 strings gives an incredible tonal range that would be impossible with a traditional guitar. This range, along with Scott’s creative harmonies and open tunings, allows Acoustic Eidolon to continually discover new and innovative sounds. Scott’s skill in playing both necks simultaneously creates layers of sound and energy, and his style is based in folk, bluegrass and rock traditions.

In a classic example of life imitating art, Scott and Alkire’s lives have been as wide and varied as the music they play. Alkire’s classical training on the cello was enhanced by the opportunity to study with G. Magyar of the Hungarian String Quartet. She was raised in Champaign, Illinois and moved to Colorado to perform with symphony orchestras and festivals such as the Boulder Bach Festival. She was recently invited to perform at Westminster Abbey for the Easter program. Just ask her about performing in this world renowned “House of Kings”! Alkire played in the Edison Middle School orchestra, at the age of ten, with schoolmates Alison Kraus, Viktor Kraus (Lyle Lovett’s bass player) and Rudolf Haken, Professor of Viola at the University of Illinois… just to name a few.

Acoustic Eidolon filmed the nationally broadcast holiday special “Joy of Christmas” for the PAX Television Network, winning a Telly Award for Best Musical Programming. The duo has also performed at the Vancouver Island Music Festival and shared the stage with Alison Kraus and Union Station, Lyle Lovett and the Boston Pops during Florida State University’s “Seven Days of Opening Nights” arts festival.

After five albums and hundreds of performances, Acoustic Eidolon continues to offer audiences a unique blend of Celtic, folk and classical music.
